BC Youth Parliament

The British Columbia Youth Parliament’s 85th Parliament will be held in Victoria at the Provincial Legislative Chambers from December 27 to 31, 2013. The Youth Parliament is a province-wide non-partisan organization for young people ages 16 to 21. It teaches citizenship skills through participation in the parliamentary session in December and continuing involvement in community service activities throughout the year. Youth Parliament is a one year commitment.

Spreading the Word Youth Writing Contest

Prizes awarded to the top 2 entries in poety and fiction.
1st Prize:  $300
2nd Prize:  $200 in each category

Prize winners will be published in the Claremont Review and on the Writers Festival website.

The Rules

1. The contest is open to all young writers enrolled in Grades 8-12 in British Columbia.
2. Entries will be accepted for previously unpublished work in each category:
• Poetry (any style): 500 word limit
• Creative Short Fiction: 1,500 word limit
3. Entries will be judged blind. Please do not put your name on your story or poem in the file you have uploaded or in the file name.
4. There is a $5 entry fee for each story or poem you submit, payable online through PayPal.
5. We will accept entries in MS Word Document or PDF formats. Please use standard margins, 12-point font and double spacing.
6. Winners will be selected by a panel of publishing and writing professionals.
7. Entries must be uploaded and payment confirmed by 5:00pm October 27, 2013.

The Healthy Living Youth Council (HLYC) is a committee of 10 – 12 high school students from all over BC. The members of the council are the driving force behind the realization of a “for youth, by youth” model of engaging students in how they can impact healthy living in their school communities.  The HLYC is a component of  Healthy Schools BC,  coordinated by DASH BC,  and in collaboration with the Provincial Ministries of Health and Education.

Writing Contest

AnxietyBC is looking for writers, poets, and video artists who have something to say about anxiety. Entrants must be BC residents between the ages of 17-29. Submissions can either be works of fiction or based on real-life experiences.

Don’t shy away from being creative and/or provocative! We will publish and promote the top 3 entries on the Georgia Straight’s blog and AnxietyBC’s website and social media channels. Best of all, there is no entry fee!

Submission deadline is October 29, 2013.

Battlefields of Europe Trip

Visit France, Belgum, and Germany during Spring Break.  This 10 day trip is open to students in grades 10-12.  (Spring Break + 3 days).  Cost?  $3,000.  For more info see Mrs. Cancilla-Sykes.

Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services is providing an opportunity for senior students to take Fire Fighting training.  A great opportunity!  See Ms Milmine for details.

Environmental Studies Camp

McQueen Lake Forestry and Environmental Studies Camp with Selkirk College and Thomson Rivers University

When?  October 20, 21 and 22

What?  Ecology, Silviculture, plant cataloguing, air photos, mapping, search and rescue, tree planting, fire management, campfire/songs and more.  See draft itinerary for more info.

How much?  FREE--you have to get to Kamloops and back.  The school district there will bus you to McQueen Lake.

How to I apply?:  Fill in the form and return to Ms Milmine in early September.

Thinking about world issues?

Explore issues including food security, international humanitarian law, refugees, HIV/AIDS, vulnerable people, and preventing discrimination! Turn passion into action and gain the skills, resources and confidence needed to create positive change in their own school and community. 

Who should attend?   BC High school students (grades 10-12)

When:  Friday, November 8 to Monday, November 11, 2013 (overnight)

 Where:  Timberline Ranch Camp in Maple Ridge, BC
