The IoT World Forum Young Women’s Innovation Grand Challenge is a global innovation challenge open to young women between the ages of 13-18. The aim of the challenge is to recognize, promote, and reward young innovators as they come up with new uses for Internet of Things technologies.

What is a problem you see today or expect to emerge in the next 5 years? How can connecting more devices and everyday objects to the internet or other networks help to solve this problem? If you’re a student who likes to take a creative approach to projects – this challenge is for you! Use your skills to help envision new solutions that can be enabled with Internet of Things technologies – both now and in the future.

The Challenge: Your goal is to come up with new ideas on how technologies from the Internet of Things can improve education, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, retail, transportation, smart cities or find new solutions that can cut through many industries.

Earth Matter - Okanagan College Art Competition

Earth Matters competition

Okanagan College is sponsoring an environmentally-focused art competition, and will accept entries in two categories.

All entrants must live in the Okanagan College catchment area (Revelstoke to Salmon Arm and south to Osoyoos). The first category is for secondary school students in Grades 10, 11 and 12, while the second is an open competition for adults age 18 and older.

Entries must be made in one of four theme areas:

• biodiversity
• water resources
• waste
• climate change

Original art work must be two-dimensional, and it (or a photograph of it) must be submitted digitally. (See below). Maximum size is 20" by 30" (approximately 51 centimetres by 76 centimetres). Entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. March 20, 2015. Winning entrants will be notified by March 25, and original works (if they aren't digital to begin with) must be delivered to an Okanagan College campus by April 1, 2015, in anticipation of an awards ceremony to be held April 9.

Winners in each of the four theme areas in the high school category will receive a $500 tuition credit from Okanagan College. Winners in the four theme areas from the open competition will receive a one-day workshop with nature artist Terry Isaac at his Penticton studio.

Entry submissions will be judged based on the digital submissions. Submission filenames should be the title of the artist's work, and not include the artist's name. All entries must be accompanied by an artist's statement (see below).

Canada Day Challenge

Proudly presented by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Day Challenge invites youth between 8 and 18 years old who live in Canada to express their pride in being Canadian by submitting an entry inspired by the theme STRONG. PROUD. FREE.   

Enter the contest in the following categories:  

-DRAW IT! (submit a poster design)

-SNAP IT!  (submit digital photographs) 

-WRITE IT! (submit a piece of creative writing) 

Participation can be through schools, clubs, associations, or individual interest! 

On the road to Canada’s 150^th birthday in 2017, the Canada Day Challenge is an excellent opportunity for young people to explore Canada’s history, culture and identity and to celebrate everything that makes Canada the strong, proud and free country it is today.  

This year, we also encourage youth to learn more about the defining moments that helped to shape our country. For example, February 15, 2015, will mark the 50^th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada. This special Flag Day is the perfect opportunity to learn more about how our flag was created and what it means to us. 

Prizes: 

Winners from across Canada will be selected for a chance to win great prizes from our partners. Winning entries will also be displayed at the Canadian Museum of History from June to September 2015. 

Nine national finalists (three from each category) will win an all-expenses paid grand prize trip for two to Ottawa to visit Canada’s national institutions and to celebrate Canada Day 2015 on Parliament Hill, as well as visit exciting sites in the National Capital region.

They were given VIP access to exciting places and they got to meet some of Canada's most inspiring personalities, including the Governor General of Canada, singer Nadja, singer-impersonator Véronic DiCaire, and Serena Ryder! On July 1^st, they were treated to VIP seating for both the Canada Day Noon Show and the iconic Evening Show and fireworks display. 

And, there’s more! One lucky winner* in the Write It! category will be invited to spend a week in Ottawa with our partner, Encounters with Canada, Canada’s largest youth forum, to learn about Canadian institutions, explore exciting career options, develop their civic leadership skills and live an extraordinary bilingual experience! (*For participants between the ages of 14 and 17 only.) 

The Canada Day Challenge is open now and will accept submissions until March 20, 2015.

2015 Student Safety Video Contest

10th annual Student Safety Video Contest - bigger and better than ever!

School is no place for bullies. Neither is work.

You have the right to a job that's free from bullying and harassment. Show respect to the people you work with and know you are entitled to respect from them.

Using the theme, No bullies at work - my right to a safe and respectful workplace, create a video (maximum 2 minutes) that explores the topic of bullying and harassment in the workplace.

When making your video, think of a creative way to get your message across. All styles of video are fair game: drama, comedy, documentary, music video, stop-motion, claymation, animation - the choice is yours!

There are categories for students in Grades 8-10, Grades 11-12 and a new category for post-secondary students under 25 years old.

Entries will be judged on their impact/transferable safety message, original creative concept, and technical execution. Winners take home cash prizes and may also advance to the It's Your Job national young worker video contest.

Submission details
Post your video on YouTube then send us your link. We'll review your video and if it meets our criteria (no inappropriate language or images and no copyrighted music please!), we'll post your entry on our website.

When we get videos, we'll post entries and you can view and rate your favorites. Check back to see new videos as they are posted - and don't forget to get your family and friends to rate their favourites too!

Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 1, 2015. But remember: the sooner your video is posted, the more people will have a chance to view it.

WorkSafeBC student video contest

Cash prizes for students and schools for best on-theme entries Verbal aggression or yelling, humiliating initiation practices or hazing, spreading malicious rumours, and calling someone derogatory names – these are just some of the forms that bullying and harassment may take on the job. No worker should be the source of this kind of behaviour, nor the target of it. That’s the goal behind the 2015 Student Safety Video Contest. With the theme, No bullies at work: My right to a safe and respectful workplace, the contest challenges youth to create a two-minute video that explores the topic of bullying, and what can be done to prevent and address it. Video considerations In creating a video, students should explore WorkSafeBC’s newbullying and harassment policies. They may want to consider the types of behaviors that constitute bullying and harassment, what to do if they or someone they know is being bullied or harassed, the duties of employers and supervisors – and what everyone can do to create a safe, healthy, and respectful workplace free from harmful and negative behaviors. Eligibility The contest is open to B.C. students in Grades 8 to 12 and, for the first time, to B.C. post-secondary students under the age of 25 (judged separately). Entry deadline is April 1, 2015. Prize In all, there’s $10,000 in prize money for students and schools. Two top high school entries will also advance to a national contest where they’ll compete for additional prizes. Three Hour Poetry Contest

Okanagan College's Three-Hour Poetry Contest, which is taking place on our regional campuses on Thursday, April 3rd, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  The contest is open to students in Grade 11, Grade 12, and all OC programs.  They can read the rules and register at www.okanagan.bc.ca/3hourpoetry.

Deadline to register is Wednesday, April 2nd at noon.

Tuition bursary prizes and winners may be published on our website - each of the regional winners will receive a $250 tuition credit, and the overall winner will receive an additional $250 tuition credit.

Terms and conditions of the six-oh-seven:

All entries must range from one minute (minimum) to 20 minutes (maximum) in length, and be fitted to a specific time category. Any films over, or under these time limits will be disqualified without viewing or adjudication. No exceptions will be made.

This is a student film festival meaning that the films are produced, directed, planned and technically executed entirely by students. The involvement of parents, teachers and professionals is limited to non-creative roles (i.e. technical advice, funding) with an exception of actors as long as they are directed by students and not performing in a lead role. Actors who are not in Grade 7-12 must be indicated clearly on registration form.

Productions and all parts of the film must be completed by the fourteenth of May 2014 in order to be eligible for this festival.

Each school can enter as many entries as they wish. However, each film must be on a SEPARATE DVD and REQUIRES A SEPARATE ENTRY & FILM REGISTRATION FORM

Each film will need to be submitted on a DVD but can be either in DVD format or as a data disc, so long as it is in H.264 (All other formats will be disqualified). We will not take responsibility for data discs of other formats, and for simplicity we do encourage you to submit DVD format.

All copies of films will be kept by the 607 Film Festival. By entering this festival you are granting 607 Film Festival exclusive rights to retain an archive copy of your production for the purposes of exhibition, promotion, and education. All entries may be used on a compilation video made available to students and media arts educators to be used for educational purposes.

Make sure that each film entered is on a separate DVD and clearly labeled on the DISC and CASE with the following information: Name of Primary Filmmaker, Title of Film, Length of Film, Your School’s Name and your team’s category.

Copyright Warnings:  Entrants are encouraged to create productions that consist entirely of original material, including music, graphics, visuals etc. YOU MAY BE DISQUALIFIED IF THE PROPER PAPER WORK IS NOT ATTACHED TO YOUR ENTRY FORM.

A.             By entering The 607 Film Festival, you are declaring that the material in your production is either entirely original; or, you obtained proper, legal permission to use someone else’s copyrighted material.

B.    For popular songs, you must submit copies of express written consent from both the publisher and the record company which state your name, the name of your production, the title of the song, the names of the composer, performer and publisher and any specific limitations on the use of the song. Note the time frame of this festival! It can take 4-6 months to obtain this permission! Any entry using a popular song without this documentation will be disqualified.

C.    To use copyright images from books, newspapers, television, videos, video games etc., you must have written permission.

D.    Material available on the internet is not considered to be in the public domain. Material is only in the public domain if it is older than 50 years, and/or the copyright holder has explicitly given up all rights to the material.

E.    The “Fair Use Clause” in copyright law applies only to very limited and specific uses; it does not apply to any material shown to the public in our festival.

F.     Historic footage i.e. footage from World War II must be checked thoroughly for the copyright holder. Check the video for a publishing company. This company will need to be contacted to obtain permission.

G.    THE USE OF ANY MATERIAL WITHOUT THE EXPRESS PERMISSION OF THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER IS ILLEGAL.

H.    Documented proof indicating permission to use such materials must accompany your entry. This means copies of all letters of permission.

I.       If using copyright cleared music, original music, or buy out library music, please include a description of this on the Film Entry Form - available from your counsellor, which you will submit with your finished film on May 14th by 5:00 p.m.

The festival is open to films of any classification, style, or genre of film. These may include, but not be limited to: live action, animation, stop-motion, documentary, narrative, and art film.

Math Contest

Mathematically inclined students in Grades 8 through 12 (including homeschoolers) have until March 28 to register for the Okanagan Valley competition’s Preliminary Round, which takes place on April 2 in the students’ participating schools.
The contest is divided into two categories: juniors (Grade 8-10) and seniors (Grade 11-12). A standardized set of questions for each category, prepared by a province-wide committee of college and university mathematicians, will be administered to students at their schools.
The top three to six finishers from each school will be invited to attend the Final Round on May 2 at UBC Okanagan. Finalists compete for top honours, cash prizes, and, for the senior with the highest score, a cash prize of $200 and a one-semester tuition scholarship to either Okanagan College or UBC Okanagan, to a maximum value of $3,000.  See Ms Milmine if you are interested.

Using the theme, Don't let your first job be your last, create a two-minute video that explores the topic of health and safety in your first job. 

There are categories for students in Grades 8-10 and in Grades 11-12 with lots of prize money up for grabs.

The Rules

6. Winners will be selected by a panel of publishing and writing professionals.
