2014 Three-hour Short Story Contest
When: Saturday, Nov. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m.Where: Choose the Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Penticton or Vernon campus of Okanagan College.
Who can Enter: Okanagan College students and Grade 11 and 12 high school students.

Are You Ready for the Challenge?
Three hours - 180 minutes - worth of words and imagination poured forth into a heartless keyboard to create a story.Win great prizes!
Four regional winners (one per campus) each get a $250 Okanagan College tuition credit.
Grand Prize: The overall winner (judges' choice selected from the four regional winners) will receive an additional $250 tuition credit (total $500) and have their short story published in a limited fine-press edition by the students in Okanagan College's Writing and Publishing Diploma Program and Kalamalka Press.

UBC Pre-Medical Diversity Symposium 2014
Have you ever thought of medical school?
Are you hesitant because you don't fit the traditional mold?
At the UBC Faculty of medicine, we welcome diversity and accept applicants from all walks of life.
We welcome you to our annual symposium, where we dispel the myth that only certain types of people are fit for medical school.
You would benefit from this event if you are a mature student, from a non-science background, Aboriginal, of rural origin, have challenging life circumstances (e.g., family, financial), are making a career change, or are non-traditional in any other way!
Our Admissions and Student Services departments will speak about the application process and the support available for students. Doctors and medical students will share stories about their obstacles and how they found their way into medicine.

Are you interested in learning a new language or meeting new people? Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing your own culture and embracing a new one, you help foster global understanding—and learn a great deal about yourself and your home country in the process.
WHAT IS A ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE?
Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs.
IS AN EXCHANGE RIGHT FOR ME?
Exchanges are for people ages 15–19 who:
- Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community
- Are flexible and willing to try new things
- Are open to cultural differences
- Can serve as an ambassador for their own country
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Costs vary from country to country. Local Rotary clubs generously host students and provide room and board with a host family and a small monthly stipend. Participants are generally responsible for:
- Round-trip airfare
- Insurance
- Travel documents (such as passports and visas)
- Spending money, additional travel, and tour fees
HOW CAN I APPLY?
Contact your local Rotary club to see if it participates and to learn more about the types of programs offered, and specific application process required. Because the selection and orientation process can be lengthy, we suggest you apply 6–12 months before you plan to leave.
CAN I HOST AN EXCHANGE STUDENT?
Hosting an exchange student can be an incredibly rewarding experience for your family, providing an international experience without leaving home. Host families provide room and board and share their lives with exchange students, involving them in family, community, and cultural activities.
