Introduction

Awakening Directions is a three-day adventure based learning program for youth ages 15-18.  The program occurs at the Bobbie Burns backcountry lodge south of Golden.  The intention of Awakening Directions is to provide a program that encourages youth to develop leadership skills and explore directions they can take in life through the outdoors and experiential learning in a respectful, safe, and empowering environment. Our program is designed around the “Circle of Courage” model of resiliency that was created by Dr. Martin Brokenleg.  Stemming from Indigenous world-views there are four universal growth needs for all children/youth: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity.  Our first year program addresses belonging and mastery through experiential learning in a safe and empowering environment for 4 days.  The second year program promotes independence through a 12-hour solo, and extensive hard skills developed by camping out in the mountains for the duration of this 5-day program.  The third year program is the final graduated stage of generosity where youth who have completed all stages of the program can return to develop leadership skills by co-facilitating with trip leaders.

Technology contest for female students Read this email online Looking for female students in B.C., ages 13 to 18, with a creative idea about how to use the Internet to improve education, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, retail, transportation, or smart cities. BC Hydro executives are offering their time to mentor and champion talented B.C. students – either individuals or teams – interested in taking part in theIoT World Forum Young Women's Innovation Grand Challenge. The goal of the contest, which features a grand prize of $20,000 and secondary prizes of $10,000 and $5,000, is to boost the number of women across the world pursuing careers in technology. Here's how we can help. BC Hydro School Programs will match up BC Hydro executives with B.C. students as they work on and complete their submissions to the contest, which closes on May 18, 2015. So if you have students in your school interested in participating in the contest, please email Roberta Nouari. For details of contest rules and prizing, see the IoT World Forum Young Women's Innovation Grand Challenge website. The forum and award ceremony is being held this year in Dubai, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend.
