Kootenay Literary Competition

The Kootenay Literary Competition! As with previous years, there are two age groups — youth (grades 7-12) and adult (18+ years) — competing for cash prizes in creative fiction, non-fiction, and poetry categories.

Video Contest: Don't let your first job be your last

Using the theme, Don't let your first job be your last, create a two-minute video that explores the topic of health and safety in your first job. 

There are categories for students in Grades 8-10 and in Grades 11-12 with lots of prize money up for grabs.

The Revelstoke Art Gallery in the Visual Arts Centre at 320 Wilson behind the Days Inn is seeking volunteers to help with its Christmas Shop exhibition which opens on Friday December 13 at 6 pm.

Jackie Pendergast, executive director of the gallery, says volunteers are needed for:

• Decorating the tree in the Gallery Sunday December 8 at 11 am;
• Counting the number of visitors Friday December 13 from 6 – 7.30 pm and from 7.30 – 9 pm;
• Wrapping purchases   from 6 – 7 pm, 7  8 pm, and 8 – 9 pm.

Jean Minguy RCMP Youth Academy

The RCMP Youth Academy is a wonderful opportunity for students in grade 11 or 12  to participate in a unique work experience in policing.

Students who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement will get very good insight in the training and demands placed on police officers.

Students will be personally challenged in their leadership abilities, physical abilities, and mental toughness. Up to 40  students are involved in a mini training camp which involves seven days at the Vernon Army Camp where students are instructed in law, procedures of law, and the role of police officers in the community.

Students will learn the following topics:

Drill Polygraph/Statement Recruiting of the RCMP Problem Solving Officer Safety/Violator Contact Media & Internal Affairs Sex Crimes/Internet Community Policing Hate Crimes Emergency Response Team Air Services Night Scenarios Note taking/10 codes Sketches/Negotiator Operational Command Center

Discover the World of Info Tech!

We are taking 10 students to Discover the World of Info Tech November 19th.  You can participate in hands-on sessions about computer animation, web programming and computer hardware with students from Kamloops, Vernon, Merritt, Salmon Arm, Gold Trail.  

Approximately 60 mentors will join a  lunch where you will have the opportunity to sit down with local business and IT professional and engage in animated conversation. These professionals share their experiences with students and answer questions about their careers.

WHAT IS A ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE?

Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs.

IS AN EXCHANGE RIGHT FOR ME?

Exchanges are for people ages 15–19 who:

• Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community
• Are flexible and willing to try new things
• Are open to cultural differences
• Can serve as an ambassador for their own country

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Costs vary from country to country. Local Rotary clubs generously host students and provide room and board with a host family and a small monthly stipend. Participants are generally responsible for:

• Round-trip airfare
• Insurance
• Travel documents (such as passports and visas)
• Spending money, additional travel, and tour fees

BC Youth Parliament

The British Columbia Youth Parliament’s 85th Parliament will be held in Victoria at the Provincial Legislative Chambers from December 27 to 31, 2013. The Youth Parliament is a province-wide non-partisan organization for young people ages 16 to 21. It teaches citizenship skills through participation in the parliamentary session in December and continuing involvement in community service activities throughout the year. Youth Parliament is a one year commitment.

The Rules

1. The contest is open to all young writers enrolled in Grades 8-12 in British Columbia.
2. Entries will be accepted for previously unpublished work in each category:

3. Entries will be judged blind. Please do not put your name on your story or poem in the file you have uploaded or in the file name.
4. There is a $5 entry fee for each story or poem you submit, payable online through PayPal.
5. We will accept entries in MS Word Document or PDF formats. Please use standard margins, 12-point font and double spacing.
6. Winners will be selected by a panel of publishing and writing professionals.
7. Entries must be uploaded and payment confirmed by 5:00pm October 27, 2013.

The Healthy Living Youth Council (HLYC) is a committee of 10 – 12 high school students from all over BC. The members of the council are the driving force behind the realization of a “for youth, by youth” model of engaging students in how they can impact healthy living in their school communities.  The HLYC is a component of  Healthy Schools BC,  coordinated by DASH BC,  and in collaboration with the Provincial Ministries of Health and Education.

Writing Contest

AnxietyBC is looking for writers, poets, and video artists who have something to say about anxiety. Entrants must be BC residents between the ages of 17-29. Submissions can either be works of fiction or based on real-life experiences.

Don’t shy away from being creative and/or provocative! We will publish and promote the top 3 entries on the Georgia Straight’s blog and AnxietyBC’s website and social media channels. Best of all, there is no entry fee!

Environmental Studies Camp

McQueen Lake Forestry and Environmental Studies Camp with Selkirk College and Thomson Rivers University

When?  October 20, 21 and 22

What?  Ecology, Silviculture, plant cataloguing, air photos, mapping, search and rescue, tree planting, fire management, campfire/songs and more.  See draft itinerary for more info.

How much?  FREE--you have to get to Kamloops and back.  The school district there will bus you to McQueen Lake.

This summer Theatre Prospero is bringing its unique drama camp to Revelstoke. The five-day program will culminate in a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream where participants will perform with professional actors for the whole community.
