SUMMER SCHOLAR PROGRAMS

A PRE-UNIVERSITY PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 10—12

JULY 2015

Join us for our seventh "Summer Scholars" program, designed to inspire the next generation of thinkers and leaders.

WEEK ONE: JULY 12-17

WEEK TWO: JULY 19-24

WEEK THREE: JULY 26-31

Experience a week of engaging in an academic course in the mornings, and participating in related social and recreational activities in the afternoons and evenings. You will participate in leadership activities as you explore the local area through hikes and excursions, choose workshop projects in media including photography, graphic design, and videography, and have optional activities from yoga to bouldering to ultimate Frisbee.

WEEK ONE: JULY 12-17

Mathematical Problem Solving (Richard Hoshino)

In this week-long course, we explore the heart of mathematics, a collection of beautiful problems connected together in unexpected ways. The problems are chosen from a wide spectrum, ranging from recreational puzzles and brain teasers to contest problems. Students will also read excerpts of a "math novel", in which the main character learns the art of problem-solving and through that process, develops insight, imagination, confidence, creativity, and critical thinking. Students will use this novel as a springboard to reflect upon their own life journeys, and explore how problem-solving principles and techniques can be applied to address some of society's toughest challenges. Students will also be given a complimentary copy of the instructor's "math novel", in which the main character learns the art of problem-solving and through that process, develops insight, imagination, confidence, creativity, and critical thinking. Views of Latin America through Film (Bianca Brigidi)

What do the films "Cidade de Deus," "Amores Perros," "Motorcycle Diaries," and "Even the Rain" have in common? What do they tell us about the Latin American societies in which they were produced? Why did Latin American filmmakers of the 1980s and 1990s begin to move away from magical realism towards social realism? How did they change their film making techniques to advance these new approaches, and what is the enduring appeal of stories that portray grim realities, but never without the possibility of redemption at the end?  These and other questions will be addressed in this seminar which focuses on the comparative study of cultural production. Our explorations will reveal the diverse populations of Latin America through films. Students will complete readings and conduct discussion of these masterpieces to unpack their impact on broader cultural studies. In this course we will watch and analyze films made in Latin America, by Latin Americans and about Latin America. Students will analyze, discuss and design critical reviews about these materials in the form of a final project using mixed digital and visual media.

WEEK TWO: JULY 19-24

Cryptology: The Mathematics of Secrecy (Sarah Mayes-Tang)

How do we send our own confidential information through secure channels, and how can we break codes to uncover the secret information of our adversaries?  Answering these questions requires innovative techniques that define the field of mathematics called cryptology.  In this course, we will make and break codes, learn about breakthroughs in cryptology that changed the course of history, and develop some beautiful mathematical tools along the way.

Songwriting and Recording (Jeff Warren)

This course explores the role of song in societies past and present, the tools and skills of songwriting, and the process of recording in the studio. The practice of songwriting - setting text to music - spans human history and cultures. This course begins with an examination of songs written in many times and places. We will then explore some of the techniques of contemporary songwriting by analyzing recent songs through an introduction to some music theory and the relationship between text and music. We then explore the techniques of recording songs through an introduction to studio recording. No musical experience is necessary for this course, but students with music experience will have the opportunity to write songs during the course and receive feedback.

WEEK THREE: JULY 26-31

Food and Society (Melanie Bedore)

If you are a human who eats food, then this is the course for you. Students of Food and Society will spend a lively week exploring the many ways that food is central to our lives. We will discuss, for example, the role that food plays in social interactions and family life; the causes of food insecurity and what North Americans are doing to address it; the politics of eating organically, locally, and fairly. We will spend some time discussing interesting questions at the cusp of food studies research: are we really living amid an obesity epidemic? How should we eat, for our own health and for the planet? What should we do with the millions of kilograms of food waste produced each year? To address these questions, students will have critical discussions, watch and critique videos, read news media pieces, and take fieldtrips in the Squamish area.

Knowledge and Reality (Darcy Otto)

Is there anything we know with absolute certainty? Are there objects that exist by necessity or is everything contingent? Are there propositions that are always true? How are we to live? These questions will be addressed as we explore some fundamental issues in philosophy. This course will test your preconceived notions about knowledge and reality, and set you on a path to lead an examined life.

COSTS

$850* residential (includes tuition, accommodation, all meals and activities)
per week (Sunday to Friday)

$425* Local Commuters (includes tuition, group dinners, and activities) per week

Note: students staying more than one week have weekend meals and activities included

* plus applicable taxes

Minimum ten / maximum twenty students per class.

 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Summer Scholars program is designed to give interested high school students an opportunity to sample the unique learning atmosphere at Quest University Canada. Students who successfully complete a week-long Quest Summer Scholars class are eligible to receive a $5000 entry scholarship to the University. Students must apply through the normal process, completing all aspects of the application, and be accepted for admission as a full-time student at Quest. All entry-level scholarships are renewable for up to four years in accordance with our scholarship renewal policy. A Summer Scholars Scholarship award does not exclude a student from applying for other Quest scholarships and/or financial aid; however, students must submit a copy of their certificate of completion with their original scholarship/admission application before the March 1 deadline.

This invitation to your Grade 10-12 female students is an opportunity to talk to and hear presentations by women who are currently studying engineering or young alumnae who are working in the industry. Day of Arts and Science at Thompson River University

Attend TRU for a day and experience being a university student!  On offer are interesting sessions such as CIA Chemicals in Action, Animal Health Technology, Building Design, Digital Photography, Writing Tabloid Style, Into to Psychology, The War Against the Pirates, Climate Change,  Respiratory Therapy...and more!

Thinking About Medicine (doctor, nurse, midwifery)? Like adventure?

GAP MEDICS offers students (aged 16 and over) the opportunity to see what the world of medicine is really like. Students travel to Tanzania or to Thailand to shadow experienced doctors and healthcare professionals.

Not only does this experience help students to make the right decision about their future career, it is also a useful addition for their applications to medical school.

Our hospital work experience is ideal for those students who are interested in medicine, nursing, dentistry or midwifery.

Are you interested in learning a new language or meeting new people? Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing your own culture and embracing a new one, you help foster global understanding—and learn a great deal about yourself and your home country in the process.

WHAT IS A ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE?

Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs.

IS AN EXCHANGE RIGHT FOR ME?

Exchanges are for people ages 15–19 who:

• Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community
• Are flexible and willing to try new things
• Are open to cultural differences
• Can serve as an ambassador for their own country

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Costs vary from country to country. Local Rotary clubs generously host students and provide room and board with a host family and a small monthly stipend. Participants are generally responsible for:

• Round-trip airfare
• Insurance
• Travel documents (such as passports and visas)
• Spending money, additional travel, and tour fees

HOW CAN I APPLY?

Contact your local Rotary club to see if it participates and to learn more about the types of programs offered, and specific application process required. Because the selection and orientation process can be lengthy, we suggest you apply 6­–12 months before you plan to leave.

CAN I HOST AN EXCHANGE STUDENT?

Hosting an exchange student can be an incredibly rewarding experience for your family, providing an international experience without leaving home. Host families provide room and board and share their lives with exchange students, involving them in family, community, and cultural activities.

Summer Drama Program

This summer Theatre Prospero is bringing its unique drama camp to Revelstoke. The five-day program will culminate in a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream where participants will perform with professional actors for the whole community.

Theatre Prospero is a professional theatre company based in Edmonton producing outstanding classical theatre since 1996.

Auditions for Speaking Parts:  

3:30pm, Friday, June 7th Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre 

Program Details

Dates: 9am - 3pm, Monday July 15 - Friday July 19

Final Performance: 7:00pm, Friday July 19

Junior Program: Ages 6-12     Senior Program: Ages 13-18

Improvisation, physical theatre, dance, stage combat, voice, music, theatrical design and more.

Theatre Production

Work with professional actors, directors and choreographers to create the main production, act in the show and learn about lighting, set, costume and sound design.

Final Performance

Perform alongside professionals in a full-scale performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre on the final evening of the program.
