UBC-O Summer Scholars Program

The Summer Scholars Program (July 13 - 26 or 29 with the Vancouver extension) is a non-credit course that will give students a solid foundation in sustainability and the science behind environmental issues. Students will be guided through field research by experts, and gain valuable hands-on experience while they:

•  complete a final study project, perfect for college applications
•   participate in a fully supervised program of classes, field trips, and recreational activities
•   explore Canada and meet students from around the world on UBC's Okanagan and Vancouver campuses

The program is open to students between 16 and 18 years of age, entering one of their final two years of recognized high-school study. Students must be capable of undertaking academic instruction in English and must be in good academic standing (unofficial transcript required). With only 40 spaces available for the Summer Scholars Program, students should apply early.

Math Contest

Mathematically inclined students in Grades 8 through 12 (including homeschoolers) have until March 28 to register for the Okanagan Valley competition’s Preliminary Round, which takes place on April 2 in the students’ participating schools.
The contest is divided into two categories: juniors (Grade 8-10) and seniors (Grade 11-12). A standardized set of questions for each category, prepared by a province-wide committee of college and university mathematicians, will be administered to students at their schools.
The top three to six finishers from each school will be invited to attend the Final Round on May 2 at UBC Okanagan. Finalists compete for top honours, cash prizes, and, for the senior with the highest score, a cash prize of $200 and a one-semester tuition scholarship to either Okanagan College or UBC Okanagan, to a maximum value of $3,000.  See Ms Milmine if you are interested.

China!

RSS students will once again have the amazing opportunity to participate in the Beijing International Education Exchange (BIEE) summer camp in China.  The British Columbia Council for International Education (BCCIE)  will be sending 45 BC secondary students between the ages of 14 to 18 to participate in the program. Four chaperones from various BC school districts will accompany the students on the 10-day camp.

 All in-China costs for BC students will be covered by BIEE.  Program fees required from each student will include airfare (international air travel from Vancouver to Beijing plus domestic air travel from within BC to Vancouver), a China visitor’s visa, medical/travel insurance, and a $200 program administration fee.   BCCIE has secured a competitive rate with Air China; the international airfare will be approximately $1215 (including all taxes and fees).   The total cost of the trip should be about $1500 per student.  

 The cost of accommodation, meals, local transportation, tuition and local activities in China will be covered by BIEE.   Students are also encouraged to bring spare cash for personal use or emergency situations.

 Applications are due Wednesday, April 9 at 4:00pm.  Applications can be submitted directly to Mr. Pfeiffer via email or to the school office as a paper copy.  Successful applicants will be notified on April 10 and submitted to BCCIE for final approval on April 11.  

2,3,5 or 10 month EXHANGE PROGRAM

STS has offered two scholarships of $2000 each for RSS students interested in going on one of their exchange programs.  They offer 2,3,5 or 10 month exchanges and the scholarship can be put towards any of the offered packages.  Take a look at the link below to see current program fees.  (Note, the fees do not include the $2000 scholarship, so take that off the total)

MD Undergraduate Program Information Session at UBC's Okanagan Campus: April 1, 2014

The UBC Faculty of Medicine Southern Medical Program is hosting an evening information session for high school students. Students will have the opportunity to:
