Revelstoke Youth Advisory Committee

The City of Revelstoke invites applications from two residents aged between 15 and 29 to serve as members of the new Revelstoke Youth Advisory Committee.  The purpose of the committee is to provide advice and suggestions to the City of Revelstoke with respect to enhancing services and opportunities for youth in the community. Committee members are volunteers selected for their interest, experience, knowledge, skills and ability to represent the youth population of the area.
If you are interested in applying, please submit a letter noting your interest and a brief outline of your qualifications. This can be mailed or delivered to the attention of the Teresa LeRose, Deputy Director of Corporate Administration, City of Revelstoke, Box 170, Revelstoke, B.C. V0E 2S0 or sent via e-mail to tlerose@revelstoke.ca. The deadline to submit applications is 4:30pm on Thursday, March 28, 2013.

The North Columbia Environmental Society is seeking qualified applicants for two positions to coordinate and assist with the management of the Downtown Community Garden and associated educational programming in Revelstoke, B.C..

Both of these positions are available only to youth between the ages of 15 to 29 years of age.

GARDEN COORDINATOR

This contract will run from April 1, 2013 to Oct 30, 2013 and will include the following outcomes:  

·      Promote and process memberships for Downtown Community Garden

·      Provide orientation for garden members

·      Coordinate garden set-up, garden management, weeder of the week program and associated work parties

·      Manage garden-related communications such as the Downtown Community Garden gmail account, and the Local Food Initiatives Facebook account

·      Liaise and report to NCES Program Coordinator

·      Work together with the NCES Program Coordinator and the Urban Jr. Farmer to deliver educational programming such as the Garden Guru Series

·      Maintain written records of garden activity, provide monthly committee updates, and end of season report

·      Promote Urban Jr. Farmer position and assist with the hiring of this position

Desired skills and attributes:

·      Experience and knowledge of organic vegetable gardening

·      Understanding of the concepts around Food Security and the Local Food Movement

·      Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

·      Strong written and verbal communication skills

·      Highly organized , ability to prioritize, and work efficiently

·      Proficient use of email, word processing, and Microsoft Excel

We are able to offer $2000 for this contract suggesting an average of 4-5hrs of work a week to accomplish the tasks associated with the above outcomes.

URBAN JR. FARMER

This contract will run from May 1^, 2013 to Sept 15, 2013 and will include the following outcomes:

·      Assist garden coordinator with garden related activities such as set-up, work parties, composting, and Weeder of the Week program.

·      Attend and assist with a selection of the educational programming associated with the Downtown Community Garden such as the Garden Guru Series

·      Engage youth to participate in garden-related activities

·      Assist with management of food processing equipment loans

·      Coordinate multi-media festival around the theme of Food Security in Revelstoke

·      Reports and works with NCES Program Coordinator and the Garden Coordinator

Desired skills and attributes:

·      A developing interest in organic gardening and the local food movement

·      Leadership skills and ability to engage and motivate youth

·      Experience organizing events with involvement in the conception, promotion, and facilitation of the event

·      Strong written and verbal communication skills

·      Highly organized , ability to prioritize, and work efficiently

·      Proficient use of email, word processing, and Microsoft Excel

We are able to offer $900 for this contract suggesting an average of 4hrs of work a week to accomplish the tasks associated with the above outcomes.

TRU Spring Break Experience

Rotary Adventure in Tourism

Our local Rotary club has been accepted to send a student to this adventure!  It takes place from Sunday, April 07 to Friday, April 12, in Kelowna.  

Criteria:  

• students should not be smokers
• students should be aware of any food or animal allergies and fully disclose this info
• students should disclose any medication or health concerns
• students should be capable of walking a trail for 1 hour
• students should be between 16 and 18 and be in good standing in the community and their        school
• students should be academically sound and be able to continue being successful in their studies
• students should demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills

Grades 6-12 Technology Scholarship
The Technology Scholarship recognizes outstanding achievement in technology-based learning. The BCSSA and Apple Canada invite BC public school students in grades 6-12 to design a website for a school or community group. It can be the school basketball team, the school band or a local not-for-profit organization. The winners will receive a scholarship prize of an Apple iPad . There are seven iPad awards, one in each of the grade-level entry categories: Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, Grade 9, Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12.

Grade 12 Essay Scholarship
The Grade 12 Essay Scholarship provides financial assistance to BC public school students planning to pursue a teaching career. One scholarship winner will be chosen among finalists from each of the BCSSA's six regional chapters by a committee of educators. The winner will receive $1000, and the five finalists will receive $200 each. In addition to submitting an essay (1000 words maximum), applicants must provide a transcript of grades and two letters of reference attesting to school/community leadership.
The topic for the 2013 Grade 12 Essay Scholarship is "Technology as learning tool - How might schools utilize technology effectively to enhance student learning?"

Beijing Internation Student Summer Camp

Our Canadian students have another AMAZING opportunity to visit China for the Beijing International Student Summer Camp!  (July 12th – 21st, 2013).  There are three spots reserved for RSS students.  Click here for the application form.

50 students from across BC will be selected to participate in this incredible intercultural experience, which brings together over 700 students from something like 28 different countries to learn more about China and get to know each other.  It is absolutely Awesome!  There are Chinese language classes and cultural activities, a kung-fu show, various sightseeing tours, shopping in the Silk Market, a chance to climb the Great Wall, plus tons of cool young people from all over the world.  Best of all, everything in China is paid for by the hosting organization (food, accommodation, language teachers, tour guides, admission fees, etc.).  The cost for students (age 14 – 18) will be approx. $2000 or less, which covers the airfare, medical insurance, and a $200 administration fee.

Minerva foundation for BC Women

Minerva is hosting their twelfth annual Learning to Lead program from May 24-26.  This is an exceptional all-expense paid opportunity for Grade 11 female students to meet and interact with graduate students, young professional women and accomplished community leaders for a weekend of inspiring speakers and workshops.

RSS can nominate one outstanding female Grade 11 student leader to apply.  Twenty-four students from BC will be selected to attend.  The student's leadership accomplishments in her school or community may be in the area of service, athletics, volunteering, student counsel or other endeavours.  Let you counsellor know if you are interested in being nominated.

Carousel of Nations

The Carousel of Nations will be taking place on Saturday, February 2 from 4 till 7pm.  We are looking for volunteers to help out with a few tasks such as setting up, selling food tickets and/or clean up/take down. Contact Ms Vincent if you're interested in helping out (even if only for an hour).

Interesting in hosting an Exchange Student?

Looking for a host family for a German student who is coming to Revelstoke for the second semester.  He is 14 years old turning 15 in March, and likes nature, the outdoors, sports, especially soccer, and skiing!
He is very allergic to cats so that is a consideration.

The host family needs to provide the student with his own bedroom, desk, closet, meals and welcome him into their home and share their life with him.

Cook?

We are looking for a motivated individual who is interested in a future culinary career. This person will be working along side our chef, helping with prep, learning to make basic dishes, and helping with dishwashing/clean-up. This position is for approx 3-4 evenings a week (Thursday-Sunday) and the approx. hours would be 5-9pm, we are offering a competitive wage!
