2015 Student Safety Video Contest

10th annual Student Safety Video Contest - bigger and better than ever!

School is no place for bullies. Neither is work.

You have the right to a job that's free from bullying and harassment. Show respect to the people you work with and know you are entitled to respect from them.

Using the theme, No bullies at work - my right to a safe and respectful workplace, create a video (maximum 2 minutes) that explores the topic of bullying and harassment in the workplace.

When making your video, think of a creative way to get your message across. All styles of video are fair game: drama, comedy, documentary, music video, stop-motion, claymation, animation - the choice is yours!

There are categories for students in Grades 8-10, Grades 11-12 and a new category for post-secondary students under 25 years old.

Entries will be judged on their impact/transferable safety message, original creative concept, and technical execution. Winners take home cash prizes and may also advance to the It's Your Job national young worker video contest.

Submission details
Post your video on YouTube then send us your link. We'll review your video and if it meets our criteria (no inappropriate language or images and no copyrighted music please!), we'll post your entry on our website.

Don't want to make a video but still want to participate?
When we get videos, we'll post entries and you can view and rate your favorites. Check back to see new videos as they are posted - and don't forget to get your family and friends to rate their favourites too!

Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 1, 2015. But remember: the sooner your video is posted, the more people will have a chance to view it.

Community Centre Preschool staff are looking for 2-3 volunteers to help set up their Christmas Party on Thursday, December 18th from 7pm for 1.5 hours - 2 hours.  Their job is mainly to transfer tables, chairs and toys from preschool room to MP rooms.

Cash prizes for students and schools for best on-theme entries Verbal aggression or yelling, humiliating initiation practices or hazing, spreading malicious rumours, and calling someone derogatory names – these are just some of the forms that bullying and harassment may take on the job. No worker should be the source of this kind of behaviour, nor the target of it. That’s the goal behind the 2015 Student Safety Video Contest. With the theme, No bullies at work: My right to a safe and respectful workplace, the contest challenges youth to create a two-minute video that explores the topic of bullying, and what can be done to prevent and address it. Video considerations In creating a video, students should explore WorkSafeBC’s newbullying and harassment policies. They may want to consider the types of behaviors that constitute bullying and harassment, what to do if they or someone they know is being bullied or harassed, the duties of employers and supervisors – and what everyone can do to create a safe, healthy, and respectful workplace free from harmful and negative behaviors. Eligibility The contest is open to B.C. students in Grades 8 to 12 and, for the first time, to B.C. post-secondary students under the age of 25 (judged separately). Entry deadline is April 1, 2015. Prize In all, there’s $10,000 in prize money for students and schools. Two top high school entries will also advance to a national contest where they’ll compete for additional prizes. WHAT IS A ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE?

Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs.

Exchanges are for people ages 15–19 who:

• Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community
• Are flexible and willing to try new things

Costs vary from country to country. Local Rotary clubs generously host students and provide room and board with a host family and a small monthly stipend. Participants are generally responsible for:

• Insurance

Contact your local Rotary club to see if it participates and to learn more about the types of programs offered, and specific application process required. Because the selection and orientation process can be lengthy, we suggest you apply 6­–12 months before you plan to leave.

Awakening Directions: Youth Adventure Based Learning Program

Awakening Directions is a three-day adventure based learning program for youth ages 15-18.  The program occurs at the Bobbie Burns backcountry lodge south of Golden from September 11-14, 2014. The program is primarily funded by generous guest of CMH - Arthur Tauck and Frank Gould.  10 youth will be selected based on the application forms.  Kim Younger will be in Revelstoke on May 29 & 30th to promote the program and help students complete their applications.

Salty Dog Scavenger Hunt and Bike Art Contest

Students from the SAS leadership class are organizing the first annual Salty Scavenger Hunt, and bike art contest May 10^th,   downtown Salmon Arm.  They are hoping that we can get as many high schools as possible to participate

This event is being held in conjunction with the annual Salty Dog weekend of events, including the bike race May 11 in Salmon Arm. The Sat May 10 events will include: Interior’s Biggest Bike Swap (private sales), Little Kids’ Run Bike Parade, Downtown High School Student scavenger hunt, Kids art and fun area, Ride-able bike art display and parade, Farm animal petting zoo, Downtown wine tasting hosted by various Shuswap wineries in downtown restaurants, and free live concert by Five Alarm Funk at 5pm.

 Scavenger Hunt details:

The event will encompass the Salmon Arm downtown, from 2:15 to 5:00. Participating students will be in teams of four. Goal to find and locate interesting Salmon Arm peculiars, using any and all problem solving techniques available.  This event will be a mix of geocaching and the TV show “The Amazing Race”. Participants will have a 2 hour time limit to find 20 items, in our downtown. The scavenger hunt will be by foot around the downtown area of Salmon Arm. The top 3 winning teams will be awarded with scholarship fund money, as well as smaller prizes for the runners-up. We are hoping to have 4 teams from each interior school in to be involved in our first year.

Bike Art contest:                                                                                                                        

 This will involve the art class, shop and textiles students as well as anyone else who would like to express their creativity. Students would team up to create a stylish yet functional bike – ride able bike art. Each team will select a member to ride this bike during the bike parade. The school with the best bike art will be awarded with a grand prize (TBA), as well as smaller prizes for the runners-up. Prizing will be given out both the winning student’s school, and the team of designers.

We are hoping that the leadership class in each school will help spread the word, get other students interested and help organize teams to participate in each event. If you would like to contact our leadership teacher, Mr. Gomme, his email is ggomme@sd83.bc.ca .
