Student Exchange Opportunity

Every year, STS awards scholarships to all successful students who at least meet the following criteria:

• Above average academic standard (C average minimum) 
• Open, friendly, highly motivated and achievement oriented
• Ability to be an outstanding ambassador for Canada and STS
• Aged between 14 and 18 at the time of departure
• Attending a Canadian High School

 Student Exchange is a non-profit student exchange organization founded in 1958. They distribute scholarships to promote international cultural awareness.

Here are some details: 

1- Special 2014 scholarship 

$2,000 scholarship on program fees for any country (semester or year only). 

Online application must be received before Feb 28, 2014.

Scholarship applicants should apply for 3 countries per order of preference to increase their chance. 

2- USA scholarship 

$2,400 scholarship on the program in the USA for a departure in Fall 2014 (semester or year only). 

This scholarship brings down the program fee to $1,500 for a semester or $2,500 for a full year. 

Online application must be received before Feb 28, 2014. 

3- European Explorer scholarship 

This scholarship amount varies from one country to the other but it lowers our program fee to $1,250 for 3 month (can be reduced to 2 month for academic purpose if needed) in the following countries: 

Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. 

Scholarship applicants should apply for 3 countries per order of preference to increase their chances. 

Online application must be received before Feb 28, 2014.

All scholars must host for at least 5 months or find a substitute host family in their school board and their Canadian school must agree to host without tuition an exchange student (5 or 10 months according to short or long-term exchange).

Rotary Adventure in Citizenship

Our local Rotary club is offering to send an RSS student, aged 16-18 years old, on a four day trip to Ottawa, Ontario for an "Adventure in Citizenship"  Rotary covers the cost of your flight and the four days in Ottawa.

You must complete the application form and write a short essay of approximately 250 words entitled "What Being a Canadian Citizen Means to Me".  You should also write a short paragraph, telling a bit about yourself, including any community service, with an emphasis on non-school related volunteering.

2014 Learning to Lead™ BC Leadership Development Program

 Dear Grade 11 Student,

The Minerva Foundation for BC Women invites you to apply for the Learning to Lead™ BC women’s interactive leadership development program to be held at St. John’s College, on the campus of UBC in Vancouver from May 23- 25, 2014. Our thirteenth annual Learning to Lead^TM program will bring together 24 Grade 11 student leaders, 24 graduate students and young professional leaders, and 24 outstanding community leaders from all over the province for the weekend. As with past years, all of our participants are women who have successfully distinguished themselves in a variety of fields.

The goals of the Learning to Lead^TM program are as follows:

• To bring together three generations of leaders - Community, Emerging, and Grade 11 Students for insights, learning, sharing and growth;
• Inspire a movement towards values driven leadership;
• To provide learning opportunities to foster the development and enhancement of leadership skills. Areas of concentration include self-awareness, values, community, personality type consciousness, team-building, creativity and communication;

·       To get participants to make leadership commitments to themselves about their community;

·       To provide tools for all participants to achieve their personal, educational, and career goals.

The weekend provides a great opportunity to create unique relationships and networks that can only be forged in an environment that’s created by the Learning to Lead^TM BC program. Each participant will learn about her style of leadership and will enjoy listening to prominent speakers as they share their leadership stories. The program is interactive and each Grade 11 leader will be matched up with one graduate student or young professional leader and one accomplished community leader with whom they will participate in the different workshops of the weekend.

 Accommodations will be provided to all Grade 11 student leaders in residence at the University of British Columbia campus within walking distance of St. John’s College, where the conference is hosted. Through the generosity of our sponsors, the Minerva Foundation for BC Women covers all direct costs including food, lodging, and transportation. In addition, students travelling to the program will be met at their arrival points and supervised by qualified chaperones throughout the weekend.

Kootenay Literary Competition

The Kootenay Literary Competition! As with previous years, there are two age groups — youth (grades 7-12) and adult (18+ years) — competing for cash prizes in creative fiction, non-fiction, and poetry categories.

Using the theme, Don't let your first job be your last, create a two-minute video that explores the topic of health and safety in your first job. 

There are categories for students in Grades 8-10 and in Grades 11-12 with lots of prize money up for grabs.

The Revelstoke Art Gallery in the Visual Arts Centre at 320 Wilson behind the Days Inn is seeking volunteers to help with its Christmas Shop exhibition which opens on Friday December 13 at 6 pm.

Jackie Pendergast, executive director of the gallery, says volunteers are needed for:

• Decorating the tree in the Gallery Sunday December 8 at 11 am;
• Counting the number of visitors Friday December 13 from 6 – 7.30 pm and from 7.30 – 9 pm;
• Wrapping purchases   from 6 – 7 pm, 7  8 pm, and 8 – 9 pm.

Jean Minguy RCMP Youth Academy

The RCMP Youth Academy is a wonderful opportunity for students in grade 11 or 12  to participate in a unique work experience in policing.

Students who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement will get very good insight in the training and demands placed on police officers.

Students will be personally challenged in their leadership abilities, physical abilities, and mental toughness. Up to 40  students are involved in a mini training camp which involves seven days at the Vernon Army Camp where students are instructed in law, procedures of law, and the role of police officers in the community.

Students will learn the following topics:

Drill Polygraph/Statement Recruiting of the RCMP Problem Solving Officer Safety/Violator Contact Media & Internal Affairs Sex Crimes/Internet Community Policing Hate Crimes Emergency Response Team Air Services Night Scenarios Note taking/10 codes Sketches/Negotiator Operational Command Center

Discover the World of Info Tech!

We are taking 10 students to Discover the World of Info Tech November 19th.  You can participate in hands-on sessions about computer animation, web programming and computer hardware with students from Kamloops, Vernon, Merritt, Salmon Arm, Gold Trail.  

Approximately 60 mentors will join a  lunch where you will have the opportunity to sit down with local business and IT professional and engage in animated conversation. These professionals share their experiences with students and answer questions about their careers.

If you are interested in becoming an exchange student for Rotary for the 2014-2015 school year, there will be an information meeting on October 23 in Room 204 at 11:35 am.

Are you interested in learning a new language or meeting new people? Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing your own culture and embracing a new one, you help foster global understanding—and learn a great deal about yourself and your home country in the process.

WHAT IS A ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE?

Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs.

IS AN EXCHANGE RIGHT FOR ME?

Exchanges are for people ages 15–19 who:

• Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community
• Are flexible and willing to try new things
• Are open to cultural differences
• Can serve as an ambassador for their own country

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Costs vary from country to country. Local Rotary clubs generously host students and provide room and board with a host family and a small monthly stipend. Participants are generally responsible for:

• Round-trip airfare
• Insurance
• Travel documents (such as passports and visas)
• Spending money, additional travel, and tour fees

HOW CAN I APPLY?

Contact your local Rotary club to see if it participates and to learn more about the types of programs offered, and specific application process required. Because the selection and orientation process can be lengthy, we suggest you apply 6­–12 months before you plan to leave.

Hosting an exchange student can be an incredibly rewarding experience for your family, providing an international experience without leaving home. Host families provide room and board and share their lives with exchange students, involving them in family, community, and cultural activities.
